So if you want to surprise a friend or just make their day brighter, here are a few texting game ideas you could try:
#1 In Character. Remember the characters you grew up watching and even emulating as teens or kids? Now is the time to bring those back into the picture by pretending to be like them—through text. Pick two celebrities or television or movie characters that you both know well, and pretend to be each of them.
Romy and Michelle, Paris and Nicole, Calvin and Hobbes, Dumb and Dumber… it’s your pick. Text each other saying things that these characters would say and in the unique ways that they would say it. The one who can go the longest without losing character wins the game. [Read: 36 racy, random funny questions for flirty guys and girls]
#2 Movie Lines. If you and your friends are into movies, then this texting game is going to be lots of fun. You can challenge one or more friends to carry on a conversation with you by using only famous movie lines. You can even choose a theme or category to make the game more interesting. You can choose to text only movie lines from all Leonardo DiCaprio movies, for example, or maybe even use lines only from musicals.
#3 Kiss, Marry, Kill. A classic from your childhood days, this is one game that you can easily transition into the mobile age. You will pick three people, whether celebrities or other friends, and your friend will have to choose which of these people they would kiss, marry, or kill. The fun is in choosing the most outrageous sets of choices. You can even make the choices hit home by choosing those within your friend’s social circle or office mates. #4 I Spy. Another classic game that you can take to a whole other level with text is “I Spy/Eye Spy.” What you can do is to let your friend know your location (just make sure they’re also familiar with the place), then pick something that you know is hard for them to guess. And then, your friend can also do the same on his or her turn. This game is also ideal if one of you is travelling to another place, making your connection go beyond the constraints of geography.
#5 Would You Rather? A simple game that is a fun and naughty way to pass the time is “Would You Rather?” You can have one or more friends in on this game. Give your friends two options and see what they would rather do. The more disgusting, outrageous, ridiculous, embarrassing, or personal, the better. You can all take turns asking questions. This game is a great way to catch up with each other and get to know more about friends you haven’t seen for quite a while. [Read: 30 Would You Rather questions that’ll leave you thinking]
#6 20 Questions. A popular icebreaker, “20 Questions” can be crazier and more entertaining when done through text, especially on a painfully boring afternoon at work. Come up with a person, place, food, animal, or thing. Then, your friend will ask you a series of “yes” or ”no” questions. They should be able to guess the word within 20 questions to gain a point. Then, it’s your turn to guess their word, and this could go on until the one with the most points win. [Read: 20 revealing questions to get to know someone a lot better]

#7 Name Game. With the “Name Game,” you and your friends decide on a category, such as a famous celebrity, country, city, food, or animal. Then, one of you will start by texting a word that falls within your decided category. The other friend must then text something that starts with the last letter of the previous word, and so on. The person who can’t text something to keep the game going is the loser. You can all agree that the loser will take you all out for dinner or a drink, or you can just choose a new category and keep the game going.
#8 Build-A-Story. Now, this is a fun game that even children can play. You can take this up a notch through text with your naughty, grown-up flair for innuendo. One of you will start by texting a phrase, and you and your friends will take turns building on this phrase until you weave an incredible story that will make all of you laugh out loud in your own private little bubbles. Just don’t mind those curious stares from people around you! [Read: 10 dirty drinking games for naughty guys and girls]
#9 Abbreviations. This game can be loads of fun when you know your friend very well, especially in terms of the things they do, their quirks, and their routines. For example, you can tell your friend/s to abbreviate the things that they are doing, and then you can try to guess it. For example, if you are making dinner while watching Friends, you can text “MDWWF.” Then your friends can try to guess what exactly you’re doing, and the fun really starts when they try to guess with outrageous *and even naughty* things. #10 What If? This is always a fun game that you may have even played on your own while in the shower or on the way to work. You can get your friends into the game, too, by taking turns texting each other “What if” scenarios and waiting for each other’s responses. The more unusual and ridiculous the scenarios, the more fun it will be. This is a great way for you and your friends to pick each other’s brains and get to know each other a little better. #11 What Would You Do? This game is a fun way to develop your imagination and get to know how your friends would handle certain situations. Whether you just got to know each other or are already long-time friends, this is a great way to pass the time. Ask your friend what they would do given certain situations, such as winning a billion bucks, getting stranded on an island, finding out that he or she only has one day to live, and many other scenarios. You can even make up your own scenarios and just let your imagination roam. Ask your friends to do the same, and you might be surprised with their answers. #12 Complete the Sentence. Another great texting game idea is when you encourage your friends to give you naughty or funny answers. You take turns texting each other incomplete sentences, and wait for what your friends will answer. For example, “If I were on a date with Jake Gyllenhal, I would skip dessert so we could…” Let your friends finish the sentence for you. You’ll all be in for an amazingly interesting texting game!
#13 Talk with Emojis. With so many emojis at your disposal, wouldn’t it be fun to just talk using exclusively emojis? From smileys to firecrackers and animals, you can make talking with your friends a little more challenging and fun with the help of emojis. Whoever can guess what you were saying wins a treat from you—and maybe just the idea of your texting them how your date went using cryptic emojis can be a juicy treat in itself.
