You hear people telling you that you’re a hypebeast, but you have no idea what it is. Well, it’s time you answered what is a hypebeast?
You can’t escape it, it’s all over social media. The word “hypebeast” is flying around faster than a fly, yet though we all seem to be using the word, most of us don’t actually know what is a hypebeast exactly.
But hypebeast is now a part of mainstream culture, whether you know what it means or not. Of course, when it comes to terms like these, the best way to get the true definition is to check out our trusty Urban Dictionary. Well, I did some light digging and found out what the term hypebeast is defined as.
How to know what is a hypebeast
1. “A person who follows a trend to be cool or in style. A person who wears what is hyped up.”
2. “A hypebeast [sic] is a kid that collect[s] clothing, shoes, and accessories for the sole purpose of impressing others. Although the individual may not have a dime to their name, they like to front like they are making far more than everybody else. Equipped with mommies [sic] credit card, the hypebeast [sic] will try his hardest to make sure he has every pair of Nike’s [sic] he saw Jay-Z wearing on 106 & Park.”
Ya’ll following? Though there seems to be a slight conflict with what a hypebeast is, the one thing we all gather from this is that a hypebeast is interested in being “in.”
They’re into the latest trends, regardless of what it is. Now, how they get those latest trends isn’t my business. So, how do you know if someone is a hypebeast? With time, you’ll be able to spot them out.
#1 They wear everything that’s trending. They’re like a walking Instagram page. True hypebeasts don’t take into consideration that everything should be in moderation. Instead, they want to show off their flash. When you see them, they’re wearing every single label you could think of. Making sure you know their shoes are different from their jacket. #2 You focus on the trends rather than the necessities. Money isn’t an object to you, even if you don’t have any. You’ll somehow get the money to buy the latest iPhone or Yeezy shoes. The point is, a hypebeast isn’t concerned about where they’re going to eat their next meal or where they’re going to sleep tonight. That’s amateur hour for them. #3 They’re proud of their collections. A hypebeast doesn’t have one or two pairs of shoes, they have an entire closet of the latest shoes. And they’re not ashamed of it. True hypebeasts take great pride in their collections of gold chains, snapbacks, shoes, and watches. They probably worked hard to get them, so why not bask in it.
#4 Savings? What savings? For some of us, we refrain from buying the on-sale dress or shoes because we’re saving money. Well, if that’s you, you’re not a hypebeast. A hypebeast is living in the moment. They don’t know what the future will be like, so they want to live and look good right now. College tuition? Rent? Those can’t be that important.
#5 They don’t necessarily like what they’re wearing. They may not even like the new Yeezy shoes that came out, but that’s not the point. The point is, they’re new, they’re brand-name and everyone wants a pair. Sure, they may even look like complete idiots in their outfits, but the point is to show that they have a genuine and rare item that the rest of us don’t.
#6 They know all the brands. If they’ve never heard of a brand then it obviously isn’t an important one. They know all the brands. All of them. They’re not interested in buying clothing and accessories which are nameless, that isn’t the hypebeast life. If their favorite celebrities aren’t wearing it, it ain’t fashion.
#7 They depend on Instagram likes. A hypebeast knows that their worth is measured purely by what other people think. And where can you truly see the thoughts of others? On Instagram. Each like is a sign that they’re doing the right thing to look top-notch. [Read: 20 reasons why people don’t like you]
#8 They heavily follow celebrities. Hypebeasts are heavily persuaded by what celebrities wear on a daily basis. If you go on their Instagram, they’re following the biggest names, and you’ll probably notice the similarities in how they dress. If Jay-Z has it, the hypebeast is going to get it.
#9 They never leave the house not hyped up. Whether they just need to run to the market for some milk or get the mail, they make sure that they’re dressed up. You never know who you’re going to see when you least expect it. So, that’s why they take extra time to get ready before leaving the house.
#10 Their clothes are in mint condition. You would think that they have a collectable figurine, but really, it’s just their pants. Hypebeasts treat their clothing as if they’re collectibles because in their eyes, their clothing is. Their expensive, trendy pieces aren’t meant to be worn, they’re meant to be worshipped.
#11 They love shoes. I really can’t emphasize this enough. Hypebeasts love shoes, but really, they love them. They may never trust a woman, but they know that the one thing that won’t betray them is their new pair of Jordans. #12 Everything must match. Now, this isn’t for every hypebeast, but for a majority, they take pride in making sure everything matches. When I mean everything, I mean everything. From their head, down to their toes, they’ll be wearing one color and one color only. Unless they have bling on.
