Shopping at Madeira
The market is a place that is not to be missed. There you can find everything that is typical of this area in an organized way, and with the characteristic sympathy of the traditional markets. You’ll find everything you’d expect and lots of surprises. Tropical fruits, flowers, wicker baskets, regional craft, honey cakes, and other typical things are a few of the exhaustive list. You can also find many local types of alcoholic liquor. It looks like every town or fruit has its own liquor at Madeira Island. For example, Curral des Freias is famous because of its nuts. Another good liquor is the ‘Licor de Noz Curral’.
Madeira’s Archipelago, Portuguese national territory, is located in the Atlantic Ocean, 500 km from African coast and 1000 km from the European continent. The Porto Santo Island, located 40 km from the Madeira’s Island, has a golden sand beach which is 9 km long. Swimming in the hot and crystal waters is definitely the best place to enjoy the vacation. The technologies of Information and Communication are highly diffused throughout the region. The international telephone for Madeira is +351 and the island’s phone code is 291. In the Madeira Island, the water is abundant, potable and of excellent quality.
Food and Drink
For lovers of fresh fish and seafood like I am, Madeira is paradise. Regional dishes include espada (fresh black scabbard fish), bife de atum e milho frito (tuna steak and fried maize), lulas (squid), caldeirada (fish soup) and of course, many varieties of bacalhau. One can also try the sopa de tomate e cebola (tomato and onion soup), espetada (meat on a spit), carne de vinho e alho (pickled pork in wine and garlic), bolo de caco (regional bread) and bolo de mel (dark honey cake).Don’t forget the variety and quality of fruit. Because of the subtropical climate, you’ll find wild growing fruits such as bananas, avocado pear and passion fruit.
