Madeira is a beautiful paradise that was created by a small volcano, and is also known as the Flower Island. Vacationing here isn’t just about lazing or shopping, but about creating an unforgettable experience. Cliff Morris tells you more.

“Pearl in the Atlantis”, “Floating Garden”, “The Island of the Eternal Spring”, the words sound exotic, and they all explain the same place, the beautiful island, Madeira. This small island and its expansions were created on a small volcano, and is something that would definitely remind anyone of the mythical Atlantis. I had heard a lot about the mystical exuberance of this volcanic “flower island”, and wondered how this place would actually be. Would it really be as good as the stories I had heard or would it let me down? Actually, it was all that I had heard and more.
The flight was relaxing but the landing reminded me of the house of horrors! When we were told to fasten our seatbelts, I peeped out and saw nothing but the vast ocean and three little specks. Were we actually going to land in the middle of the ocean, I wondered. But as we neared the land, I could see a runway through the sea. I don’t know if I was imagining but I know I saw it. Anyways, we landed safely, and I found the landing to be the most exciting part of the flight. I did get to know later that this runway was actually one single stretch that was built for landing and takeoff, and it was built into the sea!
The transfer to the hotel was quick and smooth. This island was indeed peculiar. There was the sea, but I couldn’t see a beach, just a drop down into the ocean. The houses were like little fairytale cottages, each with their own gardens. The sight was beautiful, and I fell in love with the place. So did my wife.
The view from the hotel was beautiful, and we could see the pure oceans for miles. I could also see the three small islands I saw while landing on Madeira, they looked beautiful. These were the “desertas”, desert islands on which no human life would be found. But it was inhabited by exotic animals like wolf webs, tarantulas, and many poisonous snakes.
The next morning, after an extensive breakfast, I had a taste of the Madeira wine. It was very sweet, and tasted almost like sherry. It was nice though. We also visited the capital of Madeira, a place called Funchal. Funchal offers many attractions, from the many churches and fortresses, and the market place to the “jardim botanico”, the botanical garden. I must tell you that if you ever come here, a visit to the botanical garden is a must. The place is beyond words, and is a paradise on earth, filled with beautiful flowers. There is also a bird park that you can go to at the garden, which is equally interesting.
