Good legs! Don’t those words just send your mind into an ecstatic spin, not to mention your racing heart? But are you doing anything to ensure that it looks its best? Legs are the most powerful muscles on the human body. Apart from good looks, they are a tremendous source of power in any sport. Walk into any gym and check out the number of folks engaged in a leg workout. You will hardly find anybody! When will realization dawn that you need to work on all muscles at least once a week? And when you neglect your leg workout, it will have a negative impact on more than half your body. The concept of a proportionate, symmetrical development is totally lost.
We want this to be your wake up call. To remind you of the fact that if you are not working out on your legs, at least once a week, you are working out only one half of your body. Every time a certain good looking, well chiseled actor’s movie hits the theaters, a whole bunch of guys rush to gyms. That’s really good. But, guess what they work on? Biceps!!
In an inspirational Hollywood martial art movie, the hero says, “My legs are my weapons”. And he goes on to exhibit his expertise in the art of Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do, the Korean art of self-defense, goes on to exploit the advantages of using kicks in unarmed combat. It juxtaposes the leg as a weapon to the hand. The leg has more reach, and generates five times more force per square inch than the hand. When an opponent attacks with a punch, he is literally blown away with a spin kick, as a counter attack. That is the power of strong legs!
The Muscle Groups
Gluteus
This is a set of three muscles forming each of the buttocks, the largest and strongest muscles in the body.
Quadriceps
The four front thigh muscles responsible for thigh extensions and straightening of the leg.
Hamstrings
The muscles at the back portion of the leg or the leg biceps, responsible for curling the leg back from the knee joint.
Calves
The two muscles of the lower leg, responsible to flex the toes.
How to Build these Muscles
If you think you can learn dancing, martial arts, boxing or bodybuilding, etc. just by buying a book and following instruction on DVDs, you’re fooling yourself. You will then have structured a more difficult route for yourself, where you first have to unlearn, and then, learn the right techniques. Proper form and technique is everything. This is the reason why you see qualified instructors with a university degree in physical education along with specific training from reputed organizations to guide you at a good gym.
Following the wrong exercise or technique, in all probabilities could lead to disproportionate or asymmetrical body formation. Most people do not realize that muscles grow during periods of rest after exercise. And don’t have a clue on overtraining and muscle fatigue.
